The very first time you use the GameServicesComponent on your Windows PC, you do not have any gamer profiles on it. This means that it displays the screen shown in Figure 16-4, from which you can create a new profile. You can control the screen from an Xbox gamepad or from the keyboard. You should move the highlighted menu option to select Create New Profile, and then press the A button on the gamepad, the A key on the keyboard, or the Enter key to select this option. You can also use the Windows PC mouse to select options on any of these screens.

At any moment, you can have zero or one selected element and zero or one edited ele ment. Most of the time, you shouldn t have a selected element if another element is being edited because it could confuse the end user, but there are exceptions to this rule. (See the next note.) You decide which element is in select state by assigning the SelectedIndex property:

Similarly, you decide which element is in edit state by assigning the EditItemIndex property. When you do so, you might want to reset SelectedIndex to - 1 to ensure that only one element is highlighted with a style different from the standard one:

Once you have selected Create New Profile, the screen changes to a Create Gamer Profile screen. Do not click the Continue button on this screen. Once you enter your profile name and select Submit, you are taken to the Save Gamer Profile screen shown in Figure 16-7. You are allocated a random icon, but you can change this by selecting Customize Profile. The profile that you are about to create is local to the Windows PC you are using. Select Done to save your profile. At this point, the system has signed you in.
