HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\aspnet_state\Parameters key in the registry. You shouldn t change the default port unless you have a good reason to do it, such as if the default port is already being used by another application. Using out-of-process sessions is the best setting for Web gardens, and it also provides a viable setting for Web farms. If the machine that runs the aspnet_state service isn t one of the machines that are part of the farm, this technique offers increased robustZ ness because the session state will survive restarts of the IIS machines. One important note: all the machines in a Web farm should have the same machine key settings in their machine.config files or in the web.config files of individual applications. These settings are used to encrypt and validate both the ViewState and values sent through cookies, including the session ID cookie. By default, machine key settings are autogenerZ ated, so each computer uses a different key. To have multiple servers take part in a Web farm, however, all of them should have the same machine key otherwise, one computer couldn t decipher the session cookie generated by another computer in the farm:

The validation attribute can be SHA1, MD5, or 3DES. If you use the special value autogenerate for either the validationKey or the decryptionKey attribute, these keys will be generated automatically when ASP.NET is installed.

Before you can use ASP.NET sessions based on SQL Server, you must run either the InstallSqlState.sql or the InstallPers istSqlState.sql script in the c:\WinZ dows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\vx.x.xxxx directory. The simplest way to run one of these scripts is by dragging them inside the SQL Query Analyzer program or running them from the command prompt using the OSQL utility. The InstallPersistSqlState.sql script performs the same sequence of actions, except store session variables are persisted in the ASPState database, and therefore they live even after the computer is restarted. ASP.NET also comes with the UninstallSqlState.sql script, should you wish to remove this database. The InstallSqlState.sql script creates a new database named ASPState, containing all the stored procedures that ASP.NET requires. (See Figure 26-4.) It also installs a start-up procedure named ASPState_Startup, which ensures that all the necessary TempDB tables used for storing session data are correctly re-created when SQL Server restarts. Because TempDB is used, write operations are slightly faster but session data won t survive a reboot.

To actually configure ASP.NET to use a SQL Server based session, you must change the web.config file so that the mode attribute is set to SQLServer and the sqlConnectionString attribute contains all the parameters required to connect to SQL Server:

Of course, all the machines in a Web farm should have the sqlConnectionString attribute point to the same SQL Server so that they can share session values. In general, you can write your ASP.NET code without worrying about which session mode your application is using, even though you can experience a performance hit when using out-of-process sessions. The only exception to this general rule is when you store an object in an out-of-process session variable; the object must be serializable otherwise, it can t be stored in the database. (See 10 for a review of serializable objects.)

Now that we have our accelerometer variable we can connect a method to the ReadingChanged event that it provides. We can use Visual Studio IntelliSense to help with this. It will create the delegate that refers to the method and also the event hander itself. Start by finding the Initialize method and typing the two statements as shown in Figure 17-7.

Because sessions take memory and other resources, you should disable them if you can live without them. You can disable sessions for the entire application or just for selected pages. In the former case, you set the mode attribute to Off in the web.config file:
